Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy

For individuals who have, or are currently experiencing, pelvic floor symptoms including, but not limited to:

  • pelvic pain

  • leaking, urinary urgency

  • urinary frequency

  • pelvic floor heaviness/prolapse

  • prenatal (including preparing for labor and birth), pregnancy, and postpartum

  • abdominal separation (diastasis recti abdominis)

  • scar pain, abdominal pain

  • difficulty or inconsistencies with bowel movements

In person recommended. Up to 90-minute session. Subsequent visits are offered at 60 or 30-minute time slots in person or online. Packages for follow-ups offered at a reduced rate.

The initial evaluation includes comprehensive patient history, education, low back/hip screen, option for pelvic exam with consent, and therapies based on findings including establishing a plan of care and home exercise program.

  • Leaking, or incontinence, is a common issue that can often be resolved. The most common types of incontinence include:

    • functional incontinence

    • urge incontinence

    • stress incontinence

    • mixed incontinence

    Do you experience leakage when you cough, sneeze, laugh, lift heavy objects, run, rush to the bathroom, or at rest? This can occur for various reasons. Common signs include pelvic floor weakness or tension, pain, a feeling of heaviness in the pelvic floor, and impaired coordination of pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic floor physical therapy at Tempo can help!

  • Pelvic pain can refer to low back, hips, abdomen and throughout the pelvic floor. Do you have pain with certain positions, intercourse, insertion (pelvic tool or tampon), with urinating or having a bowel movements, or any other activity? Pain can result from trauma including labor & delivery, pelvic floor tension, injury/scarring, and more.

  • Do you feel heaviness in your pelvic floor after a day of lifting heavy objects, spending prolonged time on feet, or with running? Do you feel you need to push up on your pelvic floor to empty your bladder or bowls? Do you have the sensation a tampon is in when it isn’t or you visibly see tissue you have to push up on?   • Common signs or symptoms include

    • rushing to the bathroom every hour or more often than usual,

    • feeling a strong urge to go, but not much comes out

    • reducing your fluid intake out of concern about needing to go more frequently

    • planning ahead for bathroom access when you’re in public

    • going to the bathroom every time you leave the house, just in case

  • Preparing for pregnancy brings with it a lot of unknowns! If you are preparing for pregnancy, are pregnant, or have given birth (no matter how long ago) consulting pelvic PT is beneficial for a healthy pregnancy, birth, and returning to life/activities with confidence and comfort.

  • Getting back to activity and life after having a baby is not always straightforward. Pelvic floor physical therapy is an evidence-based and supportive approach to finding the right interventions and exercises for your needs to get you back to doing what you love. Common symptoms that individuals experience postpartum that pelvic health physical therapy can help with include:

    • leaking with coughing, sneezing, laughing

    • leaking with lifting, jumping, or running

    • urinary or fecal urgency

    • constipation

    • pelvic pain with resuming intercourse or inserting a tampon

    • pelvic pain with positions

    • low back pain

    • Sacroiliac or hip pain

    • neck or back pain from feeding positions

    • pelvic floor heaviness

    • return to high intensity activities including weight lifting, running, or competitive sports
